“Toss me a cigarette, I think there’s one in my raincoat”
“We smoked the last one an hour ago”
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
“Kathy, I’m lost,” I said, though I knew she was sleeping
“I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why”

僕はなぜだか中学生の頃からこの曲がお気に入りでした。
Simon＆Garfunkelは二歳上の兄がよく聞いていた影響で、
Sound of silenceやBoxer、Old friendsなど
多くの曲を聴いていましたが、クラリネットの物悲しい音色、
終盤に奏でるハモンドオルガンの響きが堀辰雄の短編を読んでいるような、
そんな気分にしてくれます。
大学生くらいの若いカップル（当時はお兄さんお姉さん）が、
アメリカを見つける旅に出て、長距離バスの中で結婚しようよなんてはしゃぎ、
そして疲れ、「キャシー、明日が見えないんだ。空っぽで虚しいんだ。」
そんな別れ（男女の別れなのか、子供時代への別れなのか）を予感させる言葉に、
絶頂期だったアメリカの終焉も予感していたのかもしれない。
（実際はもっと長く続いていますが）
数々の現代アートを牽引してきた米国の影響は、映画や音楽も見られるように
薄れてきているように感じています。
陽気で人懐こく寛容な米国が、いつの間にか教会に行くことさえ自由にできない、
（友人に聞いてみると、事前登録が必要とのことだ）
都市が数週間も続けて放火されたり、お店が壊されてもテレビでは一歳報道されず、
（もちろん日本の報道機関は一切報道しない）警察も逮捕しないのでモラルが崩壊している。
人を傷つけたり、他人の物を壊したり奪っても逮捕されないのだ。
しかも、何週間にも渡って。
（報道するときは、背景で都市が焼かれていても、平和なデモ行進と報道される）
暴行を働くグループは一切お咎めなしなのに、マスクをしていないだけで逮捕される
おかしな世の中になってきた。
日本はどうなんでしょう？
